If you’ve never had a massage therapy session before — or if it’s been a while — it’s completely natural to have questions about what to expect on your first massage therapy appointment. Many people feel uncertain going into their first appointment, and that’s okay. The goal of this post is to walk you through exactly what a session with Kripa looks like, so you can arrive feeling informed, comfortable, and ready to get the most out of your treatment.

Before Your Appointment
As a mobile registered massage therapist, Kripa comes to you. Your first step is simply choosing where you’d like the session to take place — most clients receive treatment at home, which makes the whole experience feel more relaxed and personal.
Before your first session, Kripa will conduct a brief health intake — asking about your health history, any current injuries or conditions, medications, and your specific goals for the session. This information is kept strictly confidential and helps Kripa tailor the treatment to your individual needs. It’s a friendly conversation, not an exam. The more open you can be about how you’re feeling and what you’d like from the session, the better the treatment will be.
Setting Up the Space
Kripa arrives with a professional massage table, fresh linens, and everything needed for the session. She sets up in a comfortable area of your home — typically a bedroom or living room with enough clear space. The environment is quiet, calm, and professional. You don’t need to do anything to prepare beyond ensuring the space is reasonably clear and at a comfortable temperature.
During the Session
Once set up, Kripa steps aside to allow you to undress to your comfort level and get settled under the draping (sheets or towels). Proper draping is maintained at all times — only the area being worked on is uncovered, and your privacy and comfort are always the priority.
Kripa checks in with you about pressure and comfort throughout the session. Don’t hesitate to speak up if something feels too intense, not intense enough, or uncomfortable in any way — this feedback is welcome and helps ensure the treatment is working for you.
Depending on your needs, Kripa may use a variety of techniques. For a first appointment, many clients benefit from a combination of Swedish massage to relax the nervous system and assess the tissue, followed by more targeted work on areas of concern. Additional modalities — such as deep tissue techniques or lymphatic drainage — may be incorporated based on what’s found during the session.
After Your Session
Once the session is complete, Kripa steps out so you can take your time getting dressed. It’s normal to feel deeply relaxed — even a little drowsy — so there’s no need to rush. Kripa will share observations from the session and may offer simple self-care suggestions, such as stretches, hydration tips, or postural advice. Drinking plenty of water after a massage is recommended to support the body’s natural processes.
What About Soreness?
Some clients experience mild muscle soreness in the 24–48 hours following a session, particularly after deeper work. This is completely normal and typically resolves quickly. If you’re ever concerned about anything after your treatment, don’t hesitate to reach out to Kripa directly.
Planning Your Next Steps
After your first session, Kripa will discuss your treatment goals and suggest a schedule that makes sense for your needs — whether that’s regular ongoing care or occasional tune-ups. The hardest part is simply booking that first appointment. Once you do, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
